Is There a Tax Credit for a Power Station?
For purchases made in 2026, the federal residential clean energy credit no longer applies. Some state and utility programs still help with home batteries.
Not at the federal level for 2026 purchases. The Residential Clean Energy Credit (IRS Section 25D), which covered 30% of qualifying battery storage, ended for expenditures made after December 31, 2025 under the tax law signed in July 2025. A portable power station bought in 2026 does not earn a federal credit.
What the credit used to cover
From 2023 through 2025, Section 25D allowed a 30% credit for battery storage of at least 3 kWh installed at a home in the US. Portable stations were a gray area: the IRS guidance focused on batteries installed as part of the home, and many tax advisers would not claim a plug-in unit. If you bought and installed a qualifying system in 2025, you could claim it on your 2025 return, filed in 2026.
What still might help
- State incentives. Some states run their own battery storage rebates or credits, usually for permanently installed systems connected to the grid. Search your state energy office's website.
- Utility programs. Some utilities pay you to let them draw on your home battery during peak demand, or offer rebates for storage. These usually require an installed system, not a portable one.
- Brand sales. In practice, Black Friday discounts of 30 to 45% are worth more than a tax credit would have been on most portable units. See our Black Friday deals.
Portable station or installed battery?
If incentives matter to you, an installed home battery tied to solar is more likely to qualify for state and utility programs. The larger portable systems here, such as the EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra and Anker F3800 Plus, can be wired in through the brand's home panel, but whether that qualifies depends on each program's rules. Ask the program before you buy.
Bottom line
Do not count on a federal tax credit for a power station bought in 2026. Check your state and utility for battery programs, and time your purchase for a big sale instead.
