Can a Power Station Run a Well Pump?
Yes, if it has 240V output and enough surge. Most submersible well pumps run on 240V and need 2 to 3 times their running watts to start.
Most US well pumps are 240V, so you need a station with 240V split-phase output, such as the Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus, Anker F3800 Plus, EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 or DELTA Pro Ultra. A typical ½ to 1 hp pump draws about 1,000 to 2,000 W running and 2,000 to 4,000 W for a moment at start-up.
Check your pump first
- Voltage: look at the breaker. A double-pole breaker (two handles tied together) means 240V. A single breaker means 120V, which most stations can run.
- Horsepower: on the pump control box in the basement or well house. ½ hp and ¾ hp are most common.
- Running watts: roughly 1,000 W for ½ hp, 1,500 W for ¾ hp, and 2,000 W for 1 hp. The control box label lists amps; multiply by volts for watts.
- Startup surge: plan for 2 to 3 times the running watts unless the pump has a soft starter.
Which stations can do it
| Model | Capacity | Output | 240V | List price | Per kWh |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus | 5,040 Wh | 7,200 W | Yes | $3,149 | $625 |
| Anker SOLIX F3800 Plus | 3,840 Wh | 6,000 W | Yes | $2,799 | $729 |
| EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 | 4,096 Wh | 4,000 W | Yes | $3,699 | $903 |
| EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra | 6,144 Wh | 7,200 W | Yes | $6,299 | $1025 |
| Bluetti Apex 300 | 2,765 Wh | 3,840 W | Yes | $2,399 | $868 |
All five can supply 240V. The surge rating matters most: the Jackery (14,400 W) and Anker (9,000 W) have the most margin. The DELTA Pro 3 (8,000 W surge) handles most ½ to ¾ hp pumps. For the Bluetti Apex 300, confirm which setup provides 240V before you buy.
How long will it run?
A well pump only runs when the pressure tank needs refilling. In normal household use that adds up to 1 to 2 hours of pumping a day, or about 400 W on average for a 1 hp pump.
| Power station | Capacity | Pump only (400 W avg) | Pump + fridge + lights (620 W avg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anker SOLIX F3800 Plus | 3,840 Wh | 8.2 hours | 5.3 hours |
| EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 | 4,096 Wh | 8.7 hours | 5.6 hours |
| Jackery Explorer 5000 Plus | 5,040 Wh | 11 hours | 6.9 hours |
| EcoFlow DELTA Pro Ultra | 6,144 Wh | 13 hours | 8.4 hours |
Save water during an outage and the battery lasts longer: skip laundry and long showers, and do not run irrigation.
How to connect it
A submersible well pump is hard-wired, so you cannot plug it into the station directly. You have two options:
- Transfer switch or interlock: an electrician installs an inlet and a transfer switch so the station feeds the well pump circuit and others. This is the safe, code-compliant route.
- Brand home panels: EcoFlow, Jackery and Anker sell their own transfer panels that connect to their stations.
Never backfeed a home through a dryer outlet with a double-male cord. It can electrocute utility workers and start fires.
Bottom line
Get a 240V station with at least 2.5 times your pump's running watts in surge capacity and have an electrician install a transfer switch. Use the outage load calculator to add the pump to the rest of your essentials.
